The 'Leksell Gamma Knife' is not a knife at all but a system of 201 extremely accurate and thin gamma rays that intersect at one point. At that point they destroy their target. Outside the target area they pass through the brain with insignificant effects. In this way it is possible to treat brain lesions, which otherwise might need a dangerous open operation, in a few minutes with almost no discomfort or risk.
The 'Gamma Knife' is suitable for the treatment of a proportion of brain tumours and other disorders such as:
Meningiomas
Neuromas/schwannomas
Pituitary adenomas
Gliomas and other primary brain tumours
Brain metastases
Skull base tumours
Vascular malformations
Pain especially trigeminal neuralgia
Focal epilepsy
Parkinson's disease and other disturbances of function
